I thought it may be fun to devise a scale for how I rate my books, even though I more often than not only review books that I really enjoy. However, still fun, so I have made The Jayne Scale. Using book emoticons and a “bridge” rating scale, this is how it goes:

• 🌉 1 Bridge — A Loose plank – Interesting, but didn’t hold together
• 🌉🌉 2 Bridges — Halfway Across – Some strong moments, but the connection wasn’t quite there
• 🌉🌉🌉 3 Bridges — A Sturdy Bridge – Good, satisfying, worth the journey
• 🌉🌉🌉🌉 4 Bridges — A Beautiful Crossing – Memorable, moving and beautifully constructed
• 🌉🌉🌉🌉🌉 5 Bridges — The Other Side – A book that genuinely changed or stayed with me
